Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads

"Preface to Lyrical Ballads" - by William Wordsworth

In the 'Advertisement' to the 1798 edition of Lyrical Ballads, Wordsworth and Coleridge state that the poems in the collection were intended as a deliberate experiment in style and subject matter. Wordsworth elaborated on this idea in the "preface" to the 1800 and 1802 editions which outline his main ideas of a new poetry.

1). What is the basic difference between poetic creed of 'classicism' and 'romanticism' ?

=) The basic difference between classicism and romanticism, both are two ideologies and they are school of thought, also techniques of writing. Classicism is like intellect is the guiding force. Romanticism like as an imagination is the guiding source.

=)  Aristotle, Plato, Socratise are relied on the classical masters. Classicism connected to the Bible or biblical story. Classicism like as objectivity.

=) Romanticism talked about the medieval writers and romanticism like as subjective.

2). Why does Wordsworth say ' what is poet ?' rather who is poet ?

=) Wordsworth asks what is poet because this is regards to the answer and says that, he is a man speaking to men: a man, it is true, endowed with more lively sensibility, more enthusiasm and tenderness.

=) He has greater knowledge of human nature, and a more comprehensive soul, than one supposed to be common among mankind.

3). What is poetic diction ? Which sort of poetic diction suggested by Wordsworth in his preface ?

=) Poetic diction is choice of words. The language ad really used by men, but it should be a selection of such language.

=) It should be the language of men in a state of vivid sensation. It should have a certain colouring of imagination.

=) There is no essential difference between the words used in prose and in metrical composition. Words of prose and poetry are not clearly discriminated, so that words which be used in prose can find place in poetry and vice-versa.

4). What is poetry ?

=)  Poetry, according to Wordsworth, is the breath and finer spirit of all knowledge, the impassioned expression that is in the countenance of all science.

=)  Poetry is the instrument for the propagation of moral thoughts. Poetry seeks to ennoble and edify.

5). Discuss ' Daffodils ' - I wandered lonely as a cloud with reference to Wordsworth's poetic Creed.

=)  Daffodils : a case study to exemplify Wordsworth's poetic creed. In which this lines , I wandered lonely as a cloud.... And to end with stanza that, Ten thousand saw I at a glance.  These poetry through Wordsworth presented dafintion of the poetry , Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling : it takes it's origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.

Character of Friday in Robinson Crusoe for postcolonial aspect in the context of A Grain of Wheat

Thinking Activity: In the Context of A Grain of Wheat. How is the Native represented by colonizers? Do a character study of Friday in Robinson Crusoe. Throughout the history of mankind, there has always been an individual or a group of individuals who have deemed himself to be superior. This master-slave relationship has occurred skin colour. Friday is slave and Crusoe is his master. This relationship has also occurred in A Grain of Wheat. Britain is ruled upon Kenyan people. English people and the English language are strongly used, therefore, natives civilization does not understand the English language. Negros was a black people of Africa and people was a master (superior). Englishman has sold African people as a thing. During the 1930s, the first colonial laws were authorized formally establishing the institution of slavery. In the context of A Grain of Wheat, both the colonizer and the colonized feel morally justified in their pursuits, colonialism is ultimately an immora...

The Light House: Thinking Activity

To the Lighthouse: Virginia Woolf                    1. How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper-class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said? (Key: The 'How' of the narrative technique is to be discussed along with features of Stream of Consciousness technique which helps Woolf to put in an effective manner what she experienced in abstractions.) =). There are other techniques also through which, one can explain all the thing what Virginia Woolf wanted to say, but the technique of Stream of Consciousness seems the best to explain as the whole novel is highly psychological where the complexity of relationships as well as the problems in day to day life with near relations due to such circumstanc...
