Aristotle's Poetics
1. How far do you agree with Plato’s objection to freedom of expression and artistic liberty enjoyed by creative writers? Name the texts (novels, plays, poems, movies, TV soaps etc which can be rightfully objected and banned with reference to Plato’s objections)
=) I do agree with Plato's objection to freedom of expression and artistic liberty enjoyed by the creative writers. For example- In Ekta Kapoor's daily soaps we can see that the creative writers have written scripts in such a way when it is telecasted automatically the minds of the readers get impure and full of evil thoughts. The role of creative writers is to highlight the social issues of the society in such a way that it strikes the minds of the readers at one go when they read. And lastly, i would like to say that all Ekta Kapoor's daily soaps should be banned.
2. With reference to the literary texts you have studied during B.A. programme, write brief note on the texts which followed Aristotelian literary tradition (i.e. his concept of tragedy, catharsis, tragic hero with hamartia etc)
=) I have studied 'All My Sons' in BA program, and we can see this tragic drama as a classical tragedy. as per the definition which aristotle has given, ''Tragedy is an imitation of an action....catharsis of some emotions'' Miller's use of language is very artistic and most joe keller who has the catharsis, he finally comes to understand the true meaning of his actions.
3. With reference to the literary texts you have studies during B.A. programme, write brief note on the texts which did NOT follow Aristotelian literary tradition. (i.e. his concept of tragedy, catharsis, tragic hero with hamartia etc.)
=) According to me , The Hairy Ape can be considered as a tragedy. but it is not a conventional tragedy in the aristotelian tradition ,but it is modern one. its the same, but its form is different. according to aristotle, the hero of a tragedy must be a man of high rank like a king or prince. but modern tragedies are deal with a common man in hairy ape the hero yank but he's a common man who had to face such troubles.
4. Have you studied any tragedies during B.A. programme? Who was/were the tragic protagonist/s in those tragedies? What was their ‘hamartia’?
=) Othello is one of one of the tragic protagonist from the tragedy "Othello". the hamartia of othello was he believed what others told him without checking the credibility of the truth and his fate also done a great part in that. In the end when he goes to kill Desdemona ; his hamartia overcomes thus he doesn't listen to his own betterhalf and kills her. Desdemona gets killed without any reason and thus Othello's hamartia is Believing others without checking credibility of truth.
5. Did the ‘Plot’ of those tragedies follow necessary rules and regulations proposed by Aristotle? (Like chain of cause and effect, principle of probability and necessity, harmonious arrangement of incidents, complete, certain magnitude, unity of action etc)
=) Aristotle greek plays man before his birth character is not Destiny and Plato's has value of litreture he feels are necessary in order to change poetry and literature about positive ,negative .so Plato's rules are different from classical tragedy.
