Thinking activity on The Study of Poetry

Mathew Arnold : The Study of Poetry

● Mathew Arnold born in 24 decemmber, 1822 and died in 15 april, 1888. He was an English poet and cultural critic. Mathew Arnold had been characterized as a sage writer a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues.

The study of poetry Mathew Arnold was one of the foremost poet and critic of the 19th century. Arnold's most famous piece of literary criticism is his essay "The Study of Poetry."

◆ Write about one idea of Mathew Arnold which you found interesting and relevant in our times.

=) In our times, Arnold's idea about "Disinterested" or "Detachment" is interesting and relevant. A work of literature should be judged as an independent work rather considering its effect on authors or readers. This is key function of a critic. The critic much be impartial without any prejudice against or in favour of any particular author. He must see things as they really are.

◆ Write about one idea of Mathew Arnold which you found out-of-date and irrelevant in our times.

=) The idea of the "Touchstone" method given by Arnold is not appropriate in recent times. Arnold while giving his touchstone method makes reader aware about the fallacy in judgement. He is of the view that 'Historical fallacy' and 'Personal fallacy' marks the real estimate of poetry. The poet whose work is to be compared with the work of the great poets may differ in expression. So, this idea might create a difficulty to understand the real estimate of a work.

● Thank you... .

Northrop Frye: Archetype Literature and Myth or religion

The Archetypes of Literature (1951): Northrop Frye Herman Northrop Frye (July 14, 1912 – January 23, 1991) was a Canadian literary critic and literary theorist, considered one of the most influential of the 20th century. Frye gained international fame with his first book, Fearful Symmetry (1947), which led to the reinterpretation of the poetry of William Blake. His lasting reputation rests principally on the theory of literary criticism that he developed in Anatomy of Criticism (1957), one of the most important works of literary theory published in the twentieth century.  1.  What is Archetypal Criticism? The Light House: Thinking Activity

To the Lighthouse: Virginia Woolf                    1. How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper-class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said? (Key: The 'How' of the narrative technique is to be discussed along with features of Stream of Consciousness technique which helps Woolf to put in an effective manner what she experienced in abstractions.) =). There are other techniques also through which, one can explain all the thing what Virginia Woolf wanted to say, but the technique of Stream of Consciousness seems the best to explain as the whole novel is highly psychological where the complexity of relationships as well as the problems in day to day life with near relations due to such circumstanc...
